The King’s Disguise and Birbal’s Recognition

One day a strange thought came to Emperor Akbar’s mind. He thought, “Why don’t I disguise myself as a common man and walk around the market? Let me see how people live and what they think about me.”

Akbar took off his royal clothes. He wore a simple dhoti-kurta, tied an ordinary turban, and put on a light false beard. So that no one would recognise him, he even removed his ring.

While walking in the market, Akbar talked to many people. No one recognised him. He was happy that his disguise was very good.

Just then Birbal was also coming towards the market. He saw Akbar from a distance. After watching carefully for a few moments, Birbal smiled. He walked straight up to Akbar and said softly, “Your Majesty, your disguise is very good… but your walk has not changed.”

Akbar was astonished. He whispered, “How did you recognise me?”

Birbal laughed and explained, “Your Majesty, three small things told me.

First — you still walk straight and with pride, just as you do when you sit on the throne.

Second — when a poor child came in front of you, your hand automatically went towards your pocket, as if you wanted to give something.

Third — your eyes have the same light that only an emperor’s eyes have.”

Akbar laughed loudly. He placed his hand on Birbal’s shoulder and said, “Birbal, your power of recognition is amazing! Changing clothes does not change a person.”

Then both of them returned to the palace, laughing. That day Akbar decided that keeping a sharp eye is very important.

Moral: True recognition does not come from clothes or disguise, but from behaviour, walk, and the eyes.
