From Heart to Heart

In the small town of Rewari, Haryana, lived Radha, around fifty years old, affectionately known as “Radha Di” in her neighborhood. Her modest home always echoed with children’s laughter and neighbors’ chatter. A widow, Radha, lost her husband in a road accident ten years ago. Her only son, Vishal, worked in the city and sent her money monthly, but Radha’s true strength was her open heart, always ready to help others.

Her neighborhood was diverse, with Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh families living harmoniously. Radha rose early, prayed at her tulsi plant, and then taught neighborhood children on her veranda. Though not highly educated, she had a knack for storytelling and imparting moral lessons. Children were captivated by her tales, and parents praised her simplicity and wisdom.

Life wasn’t easy for Radha. A new family, Rahman’s, moved into the neighborhood. Rahman, a rickshaw puller, and his wife, Fatima, a domestic worker, struggled to support their three children. Their eldest, nine-year-old Asif, didn’t attend school, instead scavenging scrap to contribute to the family’s income. Seeing this, Radha’s heart ached. She believed Asif could transform his life with the right guidance.

Radha approached Rahman and Fatima. Hesitant, Rahman said, “Radha Di, we can’t afford school. Asif’s earnings help run the house.” Undeterred, Radha rallied neighbors and devised a plan. She started free classes at her home, teaching Asif and his siblings basic literacy. She contacted Vishal, who, with his friends, collected funds for Asif’s books and uniform.

Initially, Asif resisted studying, often being shy or trying to run away. But Radha’s patience and loving stories, like Krishna and Sudama’s friendship, won him over. She told him, “Asif, hard work and good friends can change your life.” Gradually, Asif began reading and writing, his eyes now sparkling with a dream—to lift his family out of poverty.

Some neighbors disapproved of Radha’s efforts, calling it a waste of time to help “outsiders.” Ignoring them, Radha persisted, believing humanity transcends religion or caste. Her efforts bore fruit. Asif enrolled in school and excelled. Inspired by Radha, Fatima started a small tiffin service, improving their finances.

During Holi, Radha invited everyone to her home. Asif’s family joined the neighborhood celebration for the first time. Amid colors and laughter, Radha saw Asif playfully apply color to his younger sister’s face. Tears welled in her eyes as she realized her small effort was not only strengthening a family but also uniting the community.

Moral of the story: This story teaches that true humanity and love can break any barrier. Small efforts and mutual support can transform society. We should never hesitate to help others, as a single act of kindness can touch many hearts.
