Once upon a time, there was peace and prosperity everywhere in King Vikramasen’s kingdom. One day, the king asked his minister, “Minister, who is the bravest soldier in my kingdom?”
The minister said, “Your Majesty, Veersen is very brave. He alone captured five dacoits.” “Really?” said the king with interest, “Bring him before me.”
When Veersen came to the court, the king praised his bravery and rewarded him with a gold coin. But just then, a messenger arrived in the court and announced, “Your Majesty, a very dangerous dacoit, Bheemsen, is robbing travelers passing through the forest. He is so powerful that ten men together cannot catch him.”
Hearing this, the king looked at Veersen and said, “Veersen, the time has come to test your bravery. Go and present that dacoit before me, alive or dead.” Veersen bowed his head, “As you command, Your Majesty.”
Veersen mounted his horse and set out for the dense forest where Bheemsen terrorized people. After several days of searching, he finally found Bheemsen’s hideout. Bheemsen was a gigantic man, with a heavy iron mace in his hand.
Veersen attacked him. A fierce battle ensued between the two. Veersen was brave, but he was no match for Bheemsen’s physical strength. Bheemsen overpowered Veersen, snatched his sword, and threw it far away.
Bheemsen laughed and said, “You coward! I have killed hundreds like you. Now it’s your turn.” Veersen realized that fighting wouldn’t work anymore, so he used his intelligence. Lying on the ground, he said, “Wait, Bheemsen! I want to say one thing before I die.” “Speak, speak quickly,” Bheemsen growled.
Veersen said, “You are very powerful, no doubt about that. But do you have the courage to speak one truth before my king?” Bheemsen was surprised to hear this. “Which truth?” Veersen said cleverly, “Go before my king and say, ‘I am Bheemsen, and I have defeated your bravest soldier.’ If you have the courage to speak this truth, then you are truly brave. Otherwise, you are only strong in power, not in courage.”
Bheemsen, who was very arrogant and foolish, swelled with pride upon hearing this. He thought this would be proof of his bravery. He said, “Why not! I will definitely come to speak this truth before your king. Let’s go, right now.” And thus, without any handcuffs or chains, Bheemsen himself walked to the royal court with Veersen.
Upon reaching the royal court, Bheemsen said arrogantly, “O King! I am Bheemsen, and I have defeated your bravest soldier.” The entire court was stunned to hear this. King Vikramasen looked towards Veersen.
Veersen bowed his head humbly and said, “Your Majesty, it is true that he defeated me in battle. But you had ordered me to capture him and bring him before you ‘alive or dead’. And see, I am presenting him before you alive, without any chains.” The king understood everything immediately. A smile spread across his face. He praised Veersen’s cleverness and sentenced Bheemsen to punishment.
And thus, Veersen accomplished a difficult task easily, not with his physical strength, but with his intelligence and cleverness. This story teaches us that every battle is won not by the sword, but by the mind. If courage and intelligence are together, no difficulty remains difficult.
