One day, there was a lot of fun in the court. A rich courtier gifted a beautiful horse to Emperor Akbar. Then he laughed and said, “Your Majesty, a horse is always a horse. A donkey is only useful for carrying loads.”
At the same time, a poor farmer was standing outside with his donkey. He had delivered grain to the royal store. The courtier mocked the donkey even more loudly.
Akbar looked at Birbal and said with a smile, “Birbal, can you turn a donkey into a horse?”
Birbal folded his hands and replied, “Your Majesty, if you permit me, I will certainly try.”
Akbar laughed and gave permission.
Birbal kept the farmer’s donkey with him. He bathed the donkey well, brushed its hair, tied a clean cloth around its neck, and covered it with a beautiful sheet. Then he trained the donkey to run short distances every day and fed it with care and love.
After three days, Birbal announced in the court, “Your Majesty, your new special horse is ready!”
When the decorated donkey was brought into the court, everyone was surprised. It no longer looked ordinary. Birbal said, “Your Majesty, this is no longer an ordinary donkey. It has learned hard work, discipline, and has received respect. When we give someone respect and good treatment, they rise far beyond their usual ability. Today this donkey has become as valuable as a horse.”
Akbar laughed loudly and clapped. He rewarded the farmer and said to the courtier, “Did you see? Sometimes a donkey can also become a horse — it only needs a little cleverness and respect.”
Joy and laughter filled the entire court. The farmer returned home proudly with his decorated donkey.
Moral: Do not judge anyone only by their outward appearance. Good treatment, hard work, and respect can help anyone rise higher.
