One night, Emperor Akbar woke up from a very strange dream. In the dream, he saw a large weighing scale. On one side of the scale rested his entire kingdom — the throne, the crown, gold, and all the treasures. On the other side lay just a single small white feather. Surprisingly, the tiny feather was heavier than the whole kingdom. The side with the kingdom had risen up.
Akbar could not sleep after that. As soon as morning came, he called the court and told everyone about the dream. Then he asked, “Tell me, what does this dream mean?”
One by one, the courtiers began to speak. Someone said, “Your Majesty, your kindness is greater than the kingdom.” Another said, “Your fame flies high and light like a feather.” Everyone gave flattering answers.
Birbal stood quietly, smiling. Akbar asked him, “Birbal, why are you silent? What is your answer?”
Birbal folded his hands and said, “Your Majesty, the dream is speaking very clearly. The kingdom, the throne, and gold look big, but if a person does not have small things like truth, kindness, and honesty in his heart, then the entire kingdom becomes light. That little feather is like the good qualities inside you. The dream is reminding you that the real weight is not of power, but of good values.”
Silence fell over the court. Then Akbar slowly smiled. He said, “Birbal, your answer is the sweetest and the truest. The dream has saved me from pride.”
From that day, Akbar often said, “Sometimes the smallest answer teaches the greatest lesson.”
Moral: Small good qualities like truth, kindness, and honesty are more valuable than great power and wealth.
